The Greatest Love

Jesus said, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).

Do you think no one loves you, because no one seems to care. Perhaps, you feel like your parents do not care about you, or your spouse no longer loves you. Or, you feel your children do not love you. On your job, you feel unaccepted by your coworkers. You have shown your love to others, yet they turn away, or do not seem to appreciate you. All the terrible things that happened in your life, you know no one cares about you. You just want to be loved and accepted, yet you do not seem to find this no matter what you do.

Do not be despaired. God and Jesus love you very much. What more do you need if you have their love. If no one else loves you, you have the greatest love, the love of God.

Understanding Jesus

I try to understand why Jesus Christ, a Jewish rabbi, was so great. He is so famous that the stories of His life and ministry have lingered for generations. He has been spoken of and written about for thousands of years. His life and ministry stands out above other prophets. Why is this?

First, He had a divine birth, which fulfilled a prophesy. It was prophesied by the prophets of old, that “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us: (Matthew 1:23) Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a virgin. An angel came to Mary and her espoused, Joseph, telling them of the forth coming birth of Jesus.

Second, many mysterious things happened at Jesus’ birth. Shepherds watching their flocks at night saw angels who told them about Jesus’ birth. The angel said, “Fear not for, behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manager. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host praising, God, and saying. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men.” A great star stood above the place where baby Jesus lay. Seeing the great star, wise men of the east came searching for the King of the Jews. They came asking, “Where is he that is born “King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2)

There were many generations of men before Jesus who were also descendents of King David, a Jewish king, yet it was Jesus who was called King of the Jews. Was it the fulfillment of the prophesies at Jesus’ birth that made them call him King of the Jews.

Jesus never claimed to be a king. He did not come to throw out the foreign invaders, the Romans, and restore the kingdom of the Jews. Instead, He chose to be a rabbi who went about teaching the laws of God and the forth coming kingdom of heaven. He performed miracles that common men could never do. He healed all that were sick, gave sight to the blind, raised the dead, walked on water, made water into wine, fed a large crowd of people with just a small amount of food. During his time on earth, he taught love and peace. He was a prince of peace and love.

Throughout the Bible scriptures of the New Testament, it shows that Jesus was loving and compassionate. In one story, it told of people who brought their children for Jesus to place his hands upon them and pray. But, His disciples rebuked them and tried to keep the children away. Jesus said, “Suffer little children and forbid them not, to come unto me: for such is the kingdom of heaven.” He placed his hands on them and blessed them. (Matthew 19: 13-15). Further, Jesus said, “And who so ever shall receive one such child in my name receiveth me. But who so shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. ” (Matthew 18:5-6)

Another story, which showed His compassion for others, was the story of an adulterous woman. Jewish scribes brought a woman accused of adultery to Jesus and sat her in his midst. They said to Him, ” Master, this woman was taken in adultery in the very act”. They reminded Him of the law that Moses commanded such a woman be stoned, but they wanted Jesus’ opinion. They wanted to find a reason to condemn Jesus for breaking His religion’s laws. Jesus wrote on the ground as though He heard them not. They continued asking Him, He lifted up himself and said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”. He again stooped down and wrote on the ground. These people left one by one for they knew they were guilty of sinning as well. The woman was left alone with Jesus. He asked her where were her accusers. “Hath no man condemned thee?” She replied that no man had and Jesus said “Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more.” He knew that most people were guilty of sin, because no one was perfect except God. (John 8: 3-11)

I am sure Jesus was sad to see very little love and compassion among people. He was sad that some religious leaders said they followed God’s teachings, yet they used their religion for personal gain. They judged people and caused them to be put to death. He knew this was not the teachings of God. He reminded his disciples, “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Jesus was considered a rebel and blasphemer by the high priest of his religion, because He publicly expressed his views about the Sabbath, which were different from theirs. Also, He whipped the money changers at the temple, because they were selling things at this holy place. He told them the temple was a place of prayer. “It is written My house is the House of prayer but you have made it a den of thieves.” (Luke 19:46) All these things started the high priest plotting to kill Him.

When the temple guards and soldiers came to arrest Jesus to take Him before the Jewish high priest, and Roman ruler, He still had compassion for others. Peter, one of His disciples, took a sword and cut off the ear of one of the slaves of the priest, who came to arrest Jesus. Jesus immediately put the man’s ear back on and healed his ear. Jesus did not resist the arrest, but went to the high priest and Pontius Pilate to be judged. As we know, He was later beaten and crucified. But, on the third day He arose from the dead and appeared to His disciples. He stayed many days with them before He ascended into heaven.

Jesus was divine because of the way He was born and the unusual things that occurred at his birth and throughout his life. He performed miracles that no common man could do. He healed the sick, made the blind to see, the lame to walk, instantly healed the lepers, raised the dead, walked on water, turned water instantly into wine, increased a small amount of food to feed a large number of people. At the moment of his death on the cross, an earthquake occurred and the veil of the Jewish temple was torn into. The centurion and others who saw all these things occur said, “Truly this was the Son of God.” (Matthew 27: 54)

Some might question, since Jesus lived over 2000 years ago, if indeed these stories were true or accurate. But indeed these Biblical writings are true. After His death and resurrection, people saw Him and communicated with Him, so it is written in the Bible.

Even in our times, Jesus has appeared to many people throughout the world. There are reports after reports of people seeing Jesus. Even Moslems have seen Jesus and He healed them. He is still touching people throughout the world and healing them of their health problems at churches and crusades. All this is proof that Jesus Christ was and is divine.

It is written when the followers of the Way (later to be called Christians) were being persecuted a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, told the assembled Jews to leave the followers of Jesus alone. He reminded them of other leaders who gathered great crowds, yet their movements fail by the wayside. “And now I say unto you refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought (it will fade away). But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; least haply ye be found even to fight against God.” (Acts 5: 34-39) Jesus teachings did not fall by the way side, and millions of people have become Christians throughout the ages. Therefore, it must have been from God. It must have been God’s plan to continue His teaching of love, peace, and bring goodwill between people.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

He came to enlighten the people of the world that love and peace is the answer to their problems, and to learn and accept this would show they were civilized, and would know the true ways of God. Those who followed his teaching would not be ignorant, but would know the secret of life.

I believe He meant that He was the one showing the world the path for peace on earth and if all people throughout the world followed His teachings they would find the answer to the problems that have plagued the world throughout the ages.
When He spoke of darkness, He meant people who did not follow His teachings were blind to the true ways for a better life. Unless, they follow His teachings they will never find peace they seek in their lives or on earth. He was saying if all will follow my teachings they will find the way for peace and love in their lives.

As I read about this great and divine man, who always helped people, yet they crucified Him, through all His pain and sorrow He still loved people. After all this, He still forgave. He said “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” He never stopped caring.

Jesus said, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20) He spoke these words to his disciples. With all the sightings of Jesus throughout the world, throughout the ages, even in our times, truly, Jesus has been and is still with us all. Why because He is a loving heavenly father, who tries to lead, guide, and protect His children.

As I read the stories about this great man and tried to understand the meaning of His life, I came to a conclusion that His quest was to show people that to follow God’s laws was the way to have peace and goodwill among all people. However, it is hard for me to understand how Jesus could still love people after they tortured and killed him. He always helped people, yet they crucified him. But, I also understand that it was because of His love that he forgave.
